Wroxeter Roman City, Shropshire

Established about AD 58, Viroconium Cornoviorum, was a Roman town, one corner of which is now occupied by the small village of Wroxeter in Shropshire. It began as a legionary fortress and later developed into a thriving civilian city. At its peak, Viroconium is estimated to have been the fourth largest Roman settlement in Britain, a civitas capital with a population of more than 15,000 people.

Impressive standing remains survive have been excavated. These include "the Old Work" - an archway, part of the baths' frigidarium and the largest free-standing Roman ruin in England - and the remains of a baths complex. The site museum and audio tour reveal how Wroxeter worked in its heyday, and the health and beauty practices of its citizens.

A Roman town house has been erected at Wroxeter and is now open to the public. A TV series was filmed early 2011, following a team of modern builders as they set about building the town house using traditional Roman methods.

Wheelchair access to shop and site via ramp. Site mostly accessible, except some areas within walls, via smooth grass, cobbles and loose and impacted gravel paths.
Some slopes and bumpy areas; strong pusher for wheelchairs recommended. Secondary viewing platform has level access.
