White Castle, Monmouthshire

Originally named Llantilio Castle, its name was changed to White castle after it was rendered in white plaster.

The castle was one of three that formed a triangle of fortresses to control entry into Wales. The castle's history dates back to Norman times and it was first recorded as the White castle in the 13th century.

Visitors will today find the castle in partial ruins, however the stone wall and towers of the inner and outer ward are still standing although the inner floors and upper walls are missing.

The entire castle is surrounded by a moat and a modern bridge now takes visitors into the castle itself. The tower stairwell has been restored allowing amazing views at the top of the beautiful surrounding countryside.

A warning to visitors, there are no toilets at the site, limited parking and no food facilities. You can take a picnic though. Only assistance dogs are allowed on the site.

Opening Times

Open all year except 24,25,and 26 December and 1st.

From April to September, Wednesdays to Sundays you will be charged admission. The site is unmanned on Mondays/Tuesdays and during the winter and there will be no admission charge during these times.

Ticket Prices

Admission charges apply from April to September, Wednesdays through to Sundays and bank holiday Mondays. However, if you go on Monday or Tuesday or between September and March the site is unmanned and there is no charge for entry.

Disabled Facilities

The path to the castle is firm though uneven in places. There is a level wooden bridge into the outer ward. Access into the inner ward is by a sloping cobbled path, a second wooden bridge and two steps.
