Whitchurch Silk Mill, Whitchurch

Whitchurch Silk Mill is a watermill on the River Test, which was constructed in 1815 on a plot of land called Frog Island. Originally it was a fulling mill (part of the finishing process of cloth weaving). Some years later, during the 1830s, it was bought by the Hide family who changed its operation to weave silk.

The mill is still in operations. Visitors can watch the skilled weavers during the week, using Victorian winding, warping and weaving machinery, or they can ave a go at weaving on hand looms themselves.

An exhibition talks about the origins of silk.

The clear water of the River Test, is said to offer the best trout fishing in the south of England. There is a tea room in the grounds, and visitors are welcome to bring picnics. A range of gifts, silk products and educational toys are available in the shop.
