Wellington Arch, London

Wellington Arch is a triumphal arch situated at Hyde Park Corner, between Green Park and Hyde Park.

It was commsioned by George VI in 1825 to commemorate the victories of the British during the Napoleonice wars. The Arch originally stood opposite Apsley House, a grade I listed building which was the home built for the Duke of Wellington after his victory over Napoleon at Waterloo.

The Arch was moved in 1882-3 to its present location on Hyde Park Corner to make way for a road widening scheme. At the same time, the Duke of Wellington was taken down and replaced with a huge bronze quadriga, the largest bronze statue in Europe.

Visitors to Wellington Arch can tour the three floors inside where there is an exhibition about the arch. At the top there are balconies offering panoramas over the the Royal Parks, the Houses of Parliament and the Household Cavalry.

Opening Times

Open from April to November from Wednesday to Sunday (including bank holidays) from 10am to 5pm. Open in the winter from Wednesday to Sunday from 10am until 4pm. Last admission half an hour before closing.
