Trefignath , Wales

This ancient chambered Tomb in Anglesey is believed to date back to 3000BC. The site was excavated in 1977-1979 and finds included pot sherds and stone tools . Prior to their erection this site was inhabited. It was only when habitation ceased that these burial chambers were erected.

The central chamber and eastern chamber were probably added several centuries after the western chamber and the whole site covered in a mound of stones. The western chamber was a simple box of flat stone slabs covered by a cairn of boulders. The central chamber now is collapsed with its massive capstone broken in two. This chamber and the earlier western chamber where then covered in a wedge shaped mound of stones retained by dry-stone walling with a forecourt. The eastern chamber is largely intact with massive portal stones and a large chamber.

Quartz seams run through the orthostats. The site is accessed from its own car park off the new wide road which runs from the roundabout south of Holyhead.
