The National Archives, Surrey
The National Archives in Kew is home to a vast array of records covering the British Isles, the territories that formed the British Empire and countries of the Commonwealth. There are 9.5 million documents available for viewing at Kew dating back to the Domesday book, which is also on display.
There is a huge range of records for visitors to view which include Medieval government, armed forces, Board of trade, Cabinet papers and Home Office records, census returns, wills, naturalisation, military and criminal records. You can order up to three documents at a time and it may take as long as 40 minutes for them to be delivered.
The archives also run exhibitions and a range of events based on treasures from the archives. There is also a museum that looks at famous events and people from British history.
Children under 14 are not allowed into the archives and food and drink is not allowed in the reading room. There is a cyber café, normal cafe and restaurant.

Wednesday - 10am-5pm
Saturday - 9:30am-5pm
Closed on Sunday, Christmas and New Years day and August bank holiday.
