The Chapel Royal, Hampton Court, Hampton Court Palace

The building of the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court was begun by Wolsey and completed under Henry VIII. The Chapel is layered with history and the chapel’s ceiling is the grand culmination of the Tudor interiors at Hampton Court.

Opposite the altar, is the royal pew where kings and queens through the ages have attended services away from the general congregation seated below.

It was here in the chapel, in 1540, Henry VIII was given a letter accusing his young new wife, Catherine Howard, of unchaste behaviour before her marriage. She was executed at the Tower of London soon afterwards.

Opening Times

The Chapel is usually open to visitors from Monday to Saturday when recordings of the Chapel organ and choir can be heard.

Please note: The Chapel Royal may close at short notice on weekdays for major church festivals (i.e Good Friday), weddings and funerals.

On Sundays, the Chapel is usually open to visitors who do not wish to attend a service during the choir lunchtime - so between 12.45-13.45.

Between April and October, visitors may enter after Evensong - so between 16.45-17.15. During late July, August and early September, when there are no Choral Services, the Chapel Royal will be open all day on Sundays.
