St. John's Gate, London

St John's gate is a reminder of Clerkenwell's monastic history. It was built in 1504 as the south entrance to a Priory that was run by the Knights Hospitaller also known as the Order of St John. The gate has a rich historic past and following the dissolution it was used as a tavern, a coffee house and a printing house.

Today, St John's gate is home to the headquarters and museum of St John Ambulance. The museum's galleries explore the Order of St John, the history of St John's Gate and the story of St John's Ambulance service. Some of the artefacts on display include a bronze cannon once owned by Henry VIII, rare knights armour, a 15th century altarpiece and medieval stone work, wood carvings and stained glass.

Visitors can take a guided tour of the Priory Church and the Norman Crypt on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 11am or 2.30pm. There is a suggested donation charge for the tour of £5 per person or £4 for senior citizens.

Opening Times

The museum is open Monday to Friday 10.00am to 5.00pm.
Saturday 10.00am to 4.00pm. Closed on Bank Holiday weekends. The gate is free to view at anytime.
