St. James's Palace, London
St James's Palace was commissioned by Henry VIII and built between 1531 and 1536 on a site that once occupied the Hospital of St James. The distinctive red brick Tudor style palace has been the location for some of the most important events in the Royal family's history.
Both Mary I and Henry VIII's illegitimate son died at the Palace, Elizabeth I was said to have stayed there while waiting for the Spanish Armada and Charles I spent his last night at St James's before his execution.
The Palace is the official residence of the Sovereign although since the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837, the Head of State now lives at Buckingham Palace. However, the Palace still remains an important part of the Royal's lives with the State apartments being used for State visits, ceremonial and formal occasions.
Unfortunately, St James's Palace is not open to the public.
