St Catherine's Castle, Cornwall
St Catherine's Castle is a small fort which was commissioned by Henry VIII during the 1530's. It was part of the country's defences needed after Henry broke with the Church of Rome, isolating England from catholic Europe. It is a two-storey building built to protect Fowey Harbour in Cornwall.
The building work was overseen by Thomas Treffry, who was subsequently involved in the building of Pendennis and St Mawes castles. A twin battery was added on a lower terrace in 1855, at the time of the Crimean War.
One emplacement was modified in WWII to accommodate a 4.7" naval gun inside a concrete shelter, but was subsequently removed to restore the Victorian gun races.
