Spencer House, London
Spencer House in London is the city's only surviving 18th century palace. It was built between 1756 and 1766 for the first Earl Spencer in the heart of St James's, overlooking Green Park. The initial architect was John Vardy who was responsible for the facades we see today but the interiors are the work of James Stuart who used Greek detailing and created one of the first houses designed in a neoclassical style.
Restored by a consortium at the end of the 20th Century, Spencer house is one of only a few remaining private palaces in the country. The palace's state rooms have been furnished with paintings, sculpture and furniture including some original pieces like Vardy's elaborate giltwood console tables in the Dining Room and the return of Stuart's Painted Room suite, both on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Access to the house is by guided tour only. The tours leave at regular intervals, last approximately one hour and can accommodate a maximum of 20 visitors.
