South Stack Lighthouse , Wales

South Stack is an island situated just off Holy Island on the North West coast of Anglesey and the home of one of Wales' most spectacular lighthouses.

The South Stack Lighthouse has warned passing ships of the treacherous rocks below since it was built in 1809. The 28 m lighthouse, designed by Daniel Alexander, is visilble to passing vessels for 28 miles, and was designed to allow safe passage for ships on the treacherous Dublin - Holyhead - Liverpool sea route. It provides the first beacon along the northern coast of Anglesey for east-bound ships. It is followed by lighthouses, fog horns and other markers at North Stack, Holyhead breakwater, The Skerries, the Mice and at the north-east tip of the island Trwyn-Du. The lighthouse is operated remotely by Trinity House.

The lighthouse uses a long life halogen lamp (150w) which is replaced every 9 weeks. The lenses used to magnify and reflect the light source are the original units installed in 1880.

Light was automated in September 1984. The fog and light signal are now controlled from Trinity House Operational Control Centre in Harwich, Essex.

The cliffs are part of the RSPB South Stack Cliffs bird reserve, based at Ellin's Tower.
