Scarborough Castle, North Yorkshire

Scarborough Castle is a former medieval Royal fortress situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the North Sea in North Yorkshire. The site of the castle, encompasses an Iron Age settlement, Roman signal station, an Anglo-Scandinavian settlement and chapel, the 12th century enclosure castle and 18th century battery.

The present stone castle was built in the 1150s on the site of an earlier wooden castle. Over the centuries, several other structures were added, expanding the important fortress that guarded the Yorkshire coastline. It was fortified and defended during various civil wars, sieges and conflicts, as kings fought with rival barons, faced rebellion and clashed with republican forces. Although once peace with Scotland was achieved, the castle's importance declined throughout the 17th century.

The seasonal Master Gunner’s Tea Room offers beautiful views of the majestic Yorkshire countryside. It serves good quality, freshly produced local food.
Visitors are welcome to picnic in the castle grounds.

Disabled Facilities

The castle and grounds are mostly accessible via smooth gravel paths, except the keep which is accessed via steps.
Steps can be avoided using alternative routes.
Strong pusher recommended. Three benches.
Toilets are adapted. The shop has access via a ramp
