Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum, Wiltshire

Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum houses one of the best collections relating to Stonehenge and local archaeology.

The museum itself is housed in The King's House, where King James I of England was entertained in 1610 and 1613. Set in the beautiful surroundings of the Salisbury Cathedral Close, the museum faces the west front of Salisbury Cathedral.

The main strength of the Museum rests in its archaeological collections: these include prehistoric material from South Wiltshire, including Stonehenge; the Pitt Rivers' Wessex collection; and a fine medieval collection including finds from Old Sarum, Clarendon Palace and the city itself. In addition we have fascinating displays of costume and ceramics, and regular temporary exhibitions.

The Museum displays questions of how and when the Stonehenge monument may have been constructed. The Museum houses a number of images of Stonehenge as seen through the eyes of artists. The gallery explores the history of archaeological research on this landmark site.
