Saffron Walden Museum, Essex

Saffron Walden museum hosts displays and exhibitions including local archaeology, cultures of distant lands, costumes and textiles, furniture and woodwork, wildlife, fine ceramics and Ancient Egypt.

The Museum has over 175,000 objects and specimens, only a small proportion of which can be displayed at any one time.

The Museum was opened in 1835 by the Saffron Walden Natural History Society, whose Trustees sought to illustrate the "Arts, Manufactures and Habits of Different Nations" and to "cultivate a taste for the beautiful in nature". The Society rapidly built up collections which included many artefacts and natural history specimens from all round the world.

There is a small sales desk with books, replicas and souvenirs.

Disabled Facilities

Almost all exhibition areas are accessible to wheelchair users. Visitor facilities include dedicated parking, ramps, a lift, stair-lifts and sound loops at the entrance desk and in the lecture and teaching spaces. There is a unisex adapted WC, which also has baby-changing facilities. The Museum has received several awards for it provision for disabled visitors.
