Rose Theatre, London

The Rose was an Elizabethan theatre built by Philip Henslowe in 1587 and was famous as a rival to the nearby Globe theatre where Shakespeare worked. The Rose was abandoned in 1605 and may have been pulled down in 1606.

In 1989 the remains of the site were threatened by building work but a campaign ensured the site was preserved and in 1999 the site was opened to the public.

The theatre site now holds a variety of shows and exhibitions, for more information either visit the website or call the box office on 0207 261 9565. To tour the Rose theatre you have to go to the Globe theatre where tours are taken to the Rose everyday in the summer months.
