Raby Castle, Co. Durham

Raby Castle in County Durham is one of the most impressive inhabited castles in the UK. Built in the mid 14th century, the castle has been home of Lord Barnard's family since 1626. A stunning castle with towers, turrets and embattled walls sits amongst 200 acres of beautiful parkland containing herds of deer.

The majestic interior contains many treasures including an impressive art collection by artists like Munnings, De Hooch, Teniers and Van Dyck. There is an important collection of Meissen porcelain as well as tapestries and furniture. Most rooms exude opulence but a highlight is the magnificent Barons' Hall where 700 knights gathered to plot the 'Rising of the North'. In contrast you can see the kitchens and servant halls downstairs.

Once you have worked up an appetite there are some tea rooms that serve light lunches, afternoon tea and snacks.

Opening Times

Park and gardens open from 11am and castle open from 12:30pm.

Open from Sunday to Wednesday in May, June and September with guided tours only Mon/Tues/ Wed.

Open daily in July and August except Saturdays.

Open on Bank Holiday weekends, including Saturdays.
