Pickering Castle, North Yorkshire
Pickering Castle was built by the Normans under William the Conquerer in 1069-1070. The main purpose of the castle at this time was to maintain control of the area after the harrying of the North. It was originally a timber and earth motte and bailey castle, and was later developed into a stone motte and bailey castle which had a stone shell keep. The keep was developed into a stone shell keep sometime between 1216 and 1236. In the early 14th century an outer ward and curtain wall were built along with 3 towers. Later a gatehouse, ovens, hall and the storehouses were added. The castle has a considerably steep cliff on the West side which would have been a great defensive attribute.
Pickering Castle's remains are particularly well-preserved because it was largely unaffected by the Wars of the Roses and the Civil War of the 17th century.
There are extensive views of North Yorkshire countryside from the castle.
