Okehampton Castle, Devon
Okehampton Castle is a ruined motte and bailey castle in Devon.
The 11th century castle has Norman origins. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) which states that it was in the possession of Baldwin de Brionne, the Sheriff of Devon.
Much of the surviving stone work, including the bulk of the Keep and the curtain walls, is of 14th century construction.
On the execution of its owner Henry Courtenay in 1539, the castle was partially dismantled.
There is a riverside picnic area and woodland walks nearby.
