Nelson's Column, London
Nelson's column stands proudly in Trafalgar Square as a memorial to the heroic Horatio Nelson. Nelson was a British flag officer for the Royal Navy and is famous for winning four prominent wars, including the Battle of Trafalgar where he tragically died.
The Column itself is 151ft tall and made of granite. The top of the column is decorated with bronze acanthus leaves which were cast from British cannon and the pedestal has four bronze panels depicting his four greatest victories. On top of this, stands the 18ft statue of Nelson which faces south towards the Admiralty.
At the base of the column are four majestic bronze-cast lions, who appear to be guarding the memorial. There is no access inside the column but there is plenty to see in and around Trafalgar square.
