National Maritime Museum, LONDON
The National Maritime Museum comprises three buildings: the Maritime Galleries, the Royal Observatory and the Queen's House.
The musuem holds one of the greatest collections of maritime history in the world, comprising of art, cartography, manuscripts, ship models and plans, scientific and navigational instruments and instruments for time-keeping and astronomy. The museum is based in Greenwich which has long had associations with sea and navigation as well as being the home of Greenwich mean time since 1884.
The Royal Observatory offers a planetarium show, exhibitions and galleries exploring time and space and the Queen's House which was built by James I, is home to some of the Museum's finest artworks, including paintings by Gainsborough, Lely, Hogarth, Reynolds, Hodges and the van de Veldes.
There is a café serving light snacks and lunches or you can enjoy a pcinic outside, near the children's play area.
Visitors may be overwhelmed at the variety of things to see and do throughout the three buildings so you may want to plan your visit in advance.
