Millenium Bridge, London
The London Millenium Bridge is a pedestrian suspension bridge that crosses the river Thames from the City to Bankside.
It was designed following a competition held by the Financial Times and Southwark council in 1996. The winners were Foster and Partners /Sir Anthony Caro/Ove Aru & Partners. They proposed an innovative design comprising of a 4m wide deck with steel balustrades and the supporting cables positioned unusually below the deck level.
The first pedestrian bridge to be built across the Thames for 100 years was opened in June 2000 and between 80,000 and 100,000 people turned up to try it out.
Problems quickly arose when the bridge started to sway under the heavy foot traffic and the bridge was nickname 'The Wobbly Bridge'. Embarrassed engineers closed the bridge while they made some modifications with the result that today you can walk across the Millenium Bridge without fear of getting sea sick.
