MacLellan's Castle, Scotland

MacLellan's Castle, in Kirkcudbright, south west Scotland, was the noble residence of the MacLellan family. It was completed in 1582 by Thomas Maclellan of Bombie. The 15 bedroom, L Plan residence was built more for comfort, than with defence in mind. In 1587, Sir Thomas and his wife Grissel entertained James VI in their home.

Following Sir Thomas and Lady Grissel’s death, the family encountered financial difficulties.

The family home was stripped of its roof and emptied of its contents, but is substantially complete. The stone-vaulted ground floor contains the kitchen and storage cellars. The family rooms are on the upper floors, including the great hall on the first floor. Hidden in the fireplace’s rear is a rare survival of a "laird’s lug" through which the master of the house could eavesdrop and spy on guests gathered in the great hall from a hidden closet behind.

The neglected ruin came into state care in 1912.
