London Wall, London
London Wall was the defensive wall first built by the Romans around Londinium, which was a strategically important port town on the River Thames. It is now the name of a road in the City of London running along part of the course of the wall.
It is believed the wall was built in the late 2nd or early 3rd century and continued to be developed until at least the end of the 4th century, making it among the last major building projects undertaken by the Romans before their departure from Britain in 410 AD.
Along with Hadrian's Wall and the road network, the London Wall was one of the largest construction projects carried out in Roman Britain. Once built, the wall was nearly 5 kilometres, enclosed an area of about 130 ha, and was 2 to 3 metres wide and about 6 m high. There was a ditch in front of the outer wall about 4 metres wide.
The wall had a number of gates around the outside that led to important Roman roads, leading to other towns in the country.
Until the later Middle Ages the wall defined the boundaries of the City of London. Today all that remains of the wall are a few substantial fragments, which can be seen in the grounds of the Museum of London, in the Barbican Estate and around Tower Hill.
