Lanercost Priory, Cumbria

Lanercost Priory was founded by Robert de Vaux around 1169, to house Augustinian Canons.

Standing close to Hadrian's Wall, the priory was regularly attacked during the long Anglo-Scottish wars, including by Robert de Bruce in 1311.

The fatally ill King Edward I rested here for five months in 1306-7, shortly before his death on his final campaign.

In 1538 the Priory was dissolved by Henry VIII, and the priory building fell into decline, after some of the lead was stripped from the priory roofs.

The Priory ruins handed over as a 'gift to the nation' in 1929.

In the churchyard is the tomb of Thomas Addison, scientist and physician. In the nave is a memorial to the Reverend Henry Whitehead, former vicar of Lanercost, best known for his pioneering epidemiological work with John Snow on cholera.

Yet there is still much to see in this best-preserved of Cumbrian monasteries. The east end of the noble 13th century church survives to its full height, housing within its dramatic triple tier of arches some fine monuments.

Lanercost tea room and farm shop is open to visitors daily, except over Christmas.
