Hinton Ampner House and Garden, Hampshire
The Garden at Hinton Ampner House was created by Ralph Stawell Dutton (1898–1985), the 8th and last Baron Sherborne, starting in 1930, making this a modern 20th century garden.
The existing house was built in 1790 but remodelled extensively in 1867, and remodelled again by Ralph Dutton between 1936 and 1939 to his idea of what it would have been like had it been built on its current scale in 1790. It was badly damaged by fire in 1960, and restored again much as it had appeared in 1936.
Ralph Dutton gave the estate to the National Trust, on his death in 1985.
The house contains a collection of Georgian and Regency furniture, Italian pictures and objets d'art.
The gardens were laid out by Ralph Dutton and are widely acknowledged as a masterpiece of 20th-century design, mixing formal and informal planting, providing year-round interest.
Dutton began by planting trees in the parkland in the early 1930s,and followed this by laying out the Sunken Garden in 1935 .
Gardeners are happy to answer visitors' questions. There is a free guided walk in the garden on Tuesdays
