Hever Castle, Kent
Hever Castle in Kent is famous for once being home to Henry VIII's wife Anne Boleyn. This double moated castle sits within 125 acres of stunning gardens and dates back to 1270.
The castle interiors are decorated with portraits, paintings, furniture, tapestries and treasures. There are two large Books of Hours (prayer books) which have both been signed and inscribed by Anne Boleyn. The long gallery contains costumed figures of Henry VIII and his six wives and the Council Chamber in the thirteenth century gatehouse contains collections of historic swords, armour, instruments of execution, torture and discipline.
The beautiful gardens contain Italian, Rose and Tudor gardens, topiary, a yew maze or walks through the more informal Sunday walk or Anne Boleyn's walk. Visitors can now walk around the Lake and spot a variety of wildlife including Kingfishers, heron and swans.
Children can expend their energy on the wooden adventure playground or risk a soaking in the splashing water maze. The aim is to reach the Grotto in the centre be stepping on circular stones but if you go the wrong way, the underwater jets will blast you! There is also a miniature model houses exhibition which looks at country houses through the ages.
Hever castle also hosts a variety of events through the summer, including jousting tournaments. Refreshments can be purchase from the two self service restaurants or you can take your own picnic.
