Hedingham Castle, Essex

Hedingham Castle is believed to occupy the site of an earlier castle built in the late 11th or early 12th century by Aubrey de Vere I, a Norman baron.

it is thought either Aubrey II or Aubrey III initiated the construction of a major stone building at Hedingham designed to reflect the enhanced status of the family.

The castle overlooks beautiful wooded grounds, parkland and gardens The formal gardens were created in 1719. Many fine specimen trees were planted, aswell as many varieties of snowdrops, in drifts around the valley walk. The Bog Garden was created in the 1920’s around the 18th century dovecote.

During the 20th century the garden reverted to an overgrown wilderness due to a lack of funds for its maintenance. The gardens were beautifully restored in 2009.

A visit to the castle and its beautiful grounds is ideal for a family outing, and during the summer there are a variety of special events which bring the castle's eventful history alive. Come and enjoy one of our exciting Jousting Tournaments or other entertainments.
