Hatfield House, Hertfordshire.
Hatfield House in Hertfordshire is a fine Jacobean House and 1000 acre estate that is home to the 7th Marquess of Salisbury. Built by Robert Cecil in 1611, the house has been in the Cecil family for 400 years. Elizabeth I spent most of her childhood in the Royal Palace of Hatfield and it was here that she learnt of her accession to the throne. The house contains many objects associated with the Queen including the 'Ermine Portrait' by Nicholas Hilliard.
The magnificent State Rooms are furnished with important paintings, furniture, tapestries and armour. There are also many original Jacobean features such as an ornately carved wooden staircase and a rare stained glass window in the private chapel.
The gardens date from the early 17th century and include a scented garden, herb garden and knot garden. Visitors can also enjoy walks through the country estate, follow the woodland trails or stop at one of the many picnic benches to enjoy a spot of lunch.
There is a play area for children plus lots of open space for them to let off steam.
Hatfield House hosts a variety of events throughout the tourist season and opening times can be affected so it is advised to check the website or call before making a visit.
