Harewood House, LEEDS

Harewood House is home to the Earl of Harewood, cousin to the Queen. The estate was bought with money made from the West Indian sugar trade in 1738 and the house was completed in 1771. The splendid State rooms contain an extensive collection of portraits, porcelain and antique furniture.

Below stairs you can see where the servants worked and lived in the kitchen, scullery and servant's hall. There is a permanent display in the housekeeper's room devoted to HRH Princess Mary, the Earl's mother and another exhibition charts the history of the sugar trade.

Outside you'll find gardens landscaped by Capability Brown which includes formal gardens, a Bhutanese Stupa, waterfall and Himalayan garden. The bird garden houses over 100 species of rare and exotic birds in sympathetic environments.

For kids there is an adventure playground and woodland walks where they can run to their hearts content.
