Hadrian's Wall, Northern England
Hadrian's Wall was built in AD122 and stretched for 73 miles from the east to west coasts in northern England.
It was built by the Roman Empire as a military fortification to prevent raids from the Scottish and survives today some 1800 years on. The majority of the wall is still intact and can be explored on foot. There are turrets and milecastles at regular intervals where troops would have been stationed to defend England.
Several of these sights are now tourist locations and have visitor centres with museums.
