Youth Hostels

Youth hostels are typically associated with backpackers but they are open to people of all ages and can offer a cheap and comfortable option for those on a budget.

A youth hostel will offer accommodation in the form of numerous bunk beds in a large room which are typically single sex. Some hostels however, offer private rooms or family rooms which offer privacy at a slightly increased cost.

In the UK there are independent hostels and those belonging to the Youth Hostelling Association (YHA). The YHA have over 200 hostels throughout England and Wales and are assessed independently on things like their facilities, cleanliness, staff and d├ęcor. Some hostels are even situated in fantastic locations like castles, mansions or thatched cottages.

At a hostel you can expect to share communal spaces like kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms. Most hostels are self-catering but some offer the option of a full meals service. Again facilities vary from hostel to hostel. There may also be facilities like washing machines, wi-fi, and bed linen provided.
