Greyfriars,Gloucester, Gloucestershire

The Grey Friars, or Franciscans, were followers of St Francis of Assisi and founded many religious houses across Europe. They wore grey habits as a symbol of their vow of poverty.

The Franciscan friary at Gloucester was founded in 1231, but in about 1518 a prominent local family, the Berkeleys of Berkeley Castle, paid for the church to be rebuilt in Perpendicular Gothic style.

The present remains are the 16th century rebuilding of the nave and north aisle. After the Dissolution the church was converted into tenements and workshops. The west end was rebuilt in the 18th century.

The ruins are now under the management of English Heritage.
