Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse , Norfolk

Gressenhall was opened in 1777 as a house of industry where paupers would work under quite a strict regime in return for accommodation. This changed after the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834: as a result the building underwent numerous changes to comply with the Act. The workhouse was a poor law institution.

The workhouse closed in 1948. After a short period of time as an old people’s home Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse opened as a museum in 1976.

Visitors can dress up in Victorian clothing and have their picture taken. The Collections Gallery contains beehives, cricket shoes, fishing rods, a hurdy gurdy, shop signs, toasters, toys and a Turkish bath.
Visitors can take cart rides round the farm past hedgerows filled with flocks of sparrows.
Imagine the life of the inhabitants of what workhouse when you see the punishment cell and hear its haunting story.

Refreshments including home-made Norfolk shortbread is available the Mardler's Rest Cafe.

The museum is closed in November, December, January and February except for school visits and special events.
