Easby Abbey, North Yorkshire
Easby Abbey or the Abbey of St Agatha is an abandoned Premonstratensian abbey originally founded by Roald, Constable of Richmond Castle in 1152.
The inhabitants were canons rather than monks. The Premonstratensians wore a white habit and became known as the White Canons. They followed a code of austerity and undertook preaching and pastoral work in the region.
The remains of Easby Abbey are most notable for its lavish roof-height refectory built around 1300 and other monastic buildings. Within the precinct is the still-active parish church, displaying fine 13th century wall paintings.
