Durham Cathedral, Durham
Durham Cathedral was as a shrine to the Norths best loved Saint, Cuthbert in 1093. Today it is regarded as one of the finest examples of a Norman Cathedral and has been awarded the status of a World Heritage site.
It is the only cathedral in England to retain nearly all of its Norman craftmanship.
Visitors who have a head for heights can climb the tower for an additional £3 or £1.50 for children. There is a minimum height restriction and footwear regulations for those wishing to see the views from the top.
The Treasures of St Cuthbert is a shrine to the 7th century Saint Cuthbert and includes his cross and coffin. There is also an audio visual display about Saint Cuthbert.
You can also visit the Monk's dormitory which now houses a library as well as a 'building the church' exhibition.
There is a restaurant serving cakes, light lunches and snacks and a gift shop for souvenirs.
