Dunnottar Castle, Scotland
Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress on a rocky headland. The buildings that survive today are mostly of the 15th–16th centuries, but the site is believed to have been an early fortress of the Dark Ages. Because of its strategic location, Dunnottar overlooked the shipping lanes to northern Scotland and as a result played a strategic role in the history of Scotland from the Middle Ages through to the Enlightenment. William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, the Marquis of Montrose and the future King Charles II, all stayed in the castle over its lifetime.
The ruins are extensive and include the keep, barracks, lodgings, stables and storehouses as well as the less-ruinous chapel and drawing room.
The ruins of the castle are spread over 3 acres, surrounded with steep cliffs that drop to the North Sea 50 metres below. The L plan castle is accessed through a narrow strip of land, joining the mainland to a steep path leading up to the gatehouse. The cliff and headland, is a notable bird sanctuary to pelagic birds.
