Delgatie Castle, Scotalnd

Delgatie Castle as it is today was built in the 1570s on the site of an earlier castle. Additional wings and a chapel were added in 1743.

The castle was forfeited by the disgraced Henry de Beaumont, Earl of Buchan after the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 and given to Clan Hay. Mary, Queen of Scots, was a guest at the castle in 1562 after the Battle of Corrichie.

Delgatie is rumoured to be haunted. A number of sightings of a ghostly red-haired figure, supposedly one Alexander Hay, were reported by soldiers posted there during the World War II.

The castle consists of a keep, adjoining house and two later wings. Notable features include a very wide turnpike stairway and painted ceilings dating from the 16th century.

Today, the castle and its gardens are open to the public throughout the summer months and there is self-catering accommodation in the Coach House and the Castle
