Cromwell Castle, Isles of Scily
Cromwell's Castle, on the island of Tresco, is a coastal Gun Tower built by Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England, in 1651 as a replacement for King Charles's Castle. The guns were mounted on the roof above the garrison's living quarters.
Originally, the tower was entered at first floor level by an external stairway on the south side. The present entrance dates from the construction of the lower gun platform added in the 1740s by Abraham Tovey, Master Gunner.
The tower was built on a promontory to protect the anchorage between Bryher and Tresco. It is one of the few surviving Cromwellian fortifications in Britain, built after the conquest of the Royalist Scillies in 1651.
