Cow Tower, Norwich, Norfolk
Cow Tower, built in 1398-9 to control a strategic point in Norwich's city defences, is one of the earliest purpose-built artillery blockhouses in England. Its height of almost 50 feet meant it overlooked the high ground on the opposite bank of the river Wensum.
It gets its name from the water meadow, once known as Cowholme, in which it stands. It was built in the 14th century and was badly damaged in the rebellion led by Robert Kett, whose men were camped on Mousehold Heath on the other side of the river.
The building is fragile so members of the public are not allowed inside it, but visitors can walk around it.
