Countess Pillar Brougham, Cumbria

The Countess Pillar monument was erected in 1656 by Lady Anne Clifford of nearby Brougham Castle, to commemorate the site of her final parting from her mother. On the low stone beside it, money was given to the poor each anniversary of their parting.

Anne Clifford, 1590-1676, spent much of her life in a long and complicated legal battle to obtain the rights of her inheritance. Her father's estates had passed to her uncle on her father's death. Anne believed it should have passed to her. Her mother, Margaret, the only person who supported her claim. In 1616 Anne travelled north to visit her mother at Brougham Castle. On her departure from the castle, Anne and her mother travelled a quarter of a mile to the main road where they parted. Margaret died a month later.

The square top of the pillar is brightly painted and carries sun-dials on its sides.
