Corbridge Roman Town, Northumberland
The first fort was established at Corbridge around AD 85. It was the most northerly town in the British Empire. By the middle of the 2nd century AD, the fort was replaced by a town, including two walled military compounds, which were garrisoned until the end of the Roman occupation of the site. The best-known finds from the site include the stone Corbridge Lion and the Corbridge Hoard of armour and sundry other items.
After Hadrian's Wall was fully commissioned Corbridge developed into a prosperous town. The town centre has been systematically excavated, producing the fascinating array of finds now displayed to visitors in the site museum.
Visitors can walk along the main street of this Roman garrison town, flanked by the remains of granaries, a fountain house, markets, workshops and temples.
