These are the United Kingdom's largest zoological gardens, where 5,000 animals live in spacious near-natural surroundings, set in 80 acres of award-winning gardens. Chester is regarded as one of Europe's top zoos. Many rare and endangered creatures breed freely in large, open, near-natural enclosures. Chester is proud to be playing a part in a world-wide conservation programme. Train: Bache or Chester Central Stations.  By Road: From Merseyside. Old (Birkenhead) Tunnel and A41 OR New (Wallasey) Tunnel and M53 to Junction 10, and follow zoo brown signs onto A5117. At busy times J12 from the M53 (signed Chester) may be better - pick up zoo brown signs from the roundabout onto the A41. From North Wales - A55 Expressway eastbound (briefly M53) and follow Zoo signs at J12. From the East - M62 Westbound, M6 Southbound, M56 Westbound, exit Junction 14 signed zoo and then brown zoo signs onto A5117 OR stay on M56, J15 to M53 and exit J12 signed Chester, and then follow brown zoo signs onto A41.
From North or South - use M56/M6 as above. Approximately 40 minutes from Liverpool or Rhyl, 50 minutes from Manchester 60 minutes from Stoke.
