Chester Zoo, UK

Chester Zoo is one of the best in Britain with over 7000 animals and 400 different species. This Zoo is very concerned about conservation and has an excellent record of breeding rare and endangered species. In the 110 acres of parkland you can see Black Rhinos, giraffes, elephants, lions, tigers, reptiles and birds amongst many others.

Recent new attractions include Realm of the Red Ape, home to the zoo's Bornean and Sumatran orang-utans. Plus 'Elephants of the Asian Forest', a new £3 million exhibit which is home to tree shrews, hornbills, squirrels, peafowl, Arowana and Probarbus fish, and a herd of Asian Elephants.

Lively kids can climb like monkeys in the Fun Ark play area or for more relaxing activities they could try pottery painting or face painting. There are also daily animal talks and opportunities to watch the sea lions being fed.

Chester Zoo's vet team looks after all the animals - from the smallest snail to the biggest of elephants. Visitors can now glimpse of the life of a vet in a special exhibition in The Joseph Banks Room. Visitors can see high tech equipment used to diagnose, treat and care for the Zoo’s 7000 animals, learn about real life case studies, discover how to tell if an elephant is pregnant as well as learning to take a tiger’s temperature without getting bitten!

Chester Zoo isn't just about animals, it is also home to award-winning gardens which reflect a passion for plants.

Opening Times

The Zoo opens at 10am each day. Closing times vary throughout the year from between 5pm and 6pm in the summer and between 4pm and 5pm in the winter.
