Chatsworth
| Set in the heart of the
Peak District National Park, Chatsworth is one of the Treasure Houses of England. It is
the ancestral home of the Dukes of Devonshire.
The Chatsworth Estate covers an area of 35,000 acres
(14,000 hectares or 55 sq. miles) spread over more than 20 miles of Derbyshire and
Staffordshire.
The 1000 acre park that surrounds
Chatsworth is open throughout the year at no charge. A free car park is provided and
everyone is welcome to walk, play and picnic in the Park.
The House has 1.3 acres of roof,
under which there are 175 rooms, 3,426 feet of passages, 17 staircases and 359 doors, all
lit by 2,084 light bulbs. There are 397 external window frames, 62 internal window frames,
5 roof lanterns and 60 roof lights with a grand total of 7,873 panes of glass. 27 baths,
55 wash hand basins, 29 sinks, 6 wash ups and 56 lavatories complete these unusual
statistics.
During normal opening hours, visitors walk around the house
at their own pace. It is possible to book a private guided tour in advance and this can be arranged to begin before
other visitors have access. This offers a rare opportunity to see the rooms and their
outstanding treasures without being disturbed and to ask questions as you go round. Tours
last approximately 1½ hours and are led by knowledgeable guides. Tours are available in
English, French and Italian. |
