Castle Rising, Norfolk
Castle Rising Castle is a ruined castle which was built in around 1138 by William d'Aubigny, 1st Earl of Arundel, who also owned Arundel Castle. It is currently owned by Lord Howard of Rising, a descendant of William d'Aubigny.
The largely intact castle keep at Castle Rising is one of the most famous 12th-century hall-keeps in the country. it is believed that its design is based on Norwich Castle.
During the Anarchy (a period in the 12th century characterised by civil war and unsettled government) the castle was the site of a mint producing pennies for King Stephen. Between 1330 and 1358, it was the residence of the displaced former queen, Isabella of France, who died here.
The castle is in excellent condition in spite of its 850 years. The earthwork surrounding the moat features many delicate wild flowers and butterflies in spring or summer.
Visitors can walk right round the building, getting a great view of the castle, and of the local village of Castle Rising.
