Cardoness Castle,

Cardoness Castle is a well-preserved 15th Century tower house. It was originally owned by the MacCulloch family of Galloway also known as the MacCullochs of Myreton.

They were a high profile Galloway family, with high social standing. They were notorious for their lawlessness, even against their own family members. In 1501, Ninian McCulloch of Cardoness was prosecuted for breaking into a barn and stealing - from his own mother. The McCullochs were involved in a long and bitter feud with their neighbours, the Gordons, which eventually led to their downfall. They abandoned the castle in the late 17th Century, following the execution of Sir Godfrey McCulloch for the murder of a Clan Gordon neighbour.

Fleet Bay can be seen from the castle's battlements.
