Byland Abbey, North Yorkshire
Byland Abbey was founded as a Savigniac abbey in 1135 and was absorbed by the Cistercian order in 1147. In its early life it was involved in disputes with no fewer than four other religious establishments: (Furness Abbey, Calder Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey and Newburgh Priory). It was famed for its sheep rearing and wool exports and enjoyed some financial success. Its church was said to be among the finest 12th-century churches in Europe.
It was dissolved on 30 November 1538.
Impressive remains of the abbey are still visible today, including the lower half of a huge rose window. Some of the brightly-coloured medieval floor tiles also still exist.

Access to abbey and grounds: Via smooth grass. Custodians will advise wheelchair users of a route around the ruins which avoids steps.
Benches provided.
Some grass areas may be marshy in wet weather.
