Burgh Castle, Norfolk

The Roman site at Burgh is part of a series of forts along the Roman ‘Saxon Shore’, the stretch of coast extending between the Solent and the Wash. These forts are believed to have been a defensive system against seaborne attack. The fort is a very large rectangle with three of the tall massively built walls still extant; the fourth fell into what was once an estuary but is now a marsh. Breydon Water is all that is left of the estuary this fort once overlooked.

Burgh Castle is one of the best preserved Roman monuments in the country. t was constructed in the late 3rd century on a low cliff above the Waveney estuary.

Over the years the ruins have been plundered for building material.
