Broadlands, Hampshire
Broadlands is best known as the former home of the late Lord Louis Mountbatten, however its history involves more than just one man. The house is important for many great royal and historic events and previous owners include Henry VIII. The River Test flows for four miles through the estate and makes a stunning addition to Capability Brown's gardening craftsmanship.
Inside there is an array of art treasures, antique furniture and wealthy interior design. Greek and Roman sculptures can be seen in the Sculpture Hall, there are paintings by Van Dyck, 18th and 19th century portraits, and a collection of Wedgwood.
The plasterwork in Broadlands is of great importance with fine examples created by the famous Joseph Rose the Elder. The Wedgewood room is of particular interest as it was plastered and decorated to resemble a piece of Wedgwood.
Broadlands house is accessible by guided tour only. The Mountbatten exhibition is self guiding. There are no catering facilities but there is a picnic area
Opening Times
In 2008 the House will be open from Thursday 26th June - Tuesday 2nd September. Monday to Friday 1pm until 5:30pm. Also open on August bank holiday Monday.
