Bradford-on-Avon Tithe Barn, Wiltshire
Built in the early 14th century, the Bradford-on-Avon Tithe Barn originally formed part of a range of farm buildings grouped around an open rectangular yard.
It is 180 feet long and 30 feet wide and is now part of Barton Farm Country Park. The barn would have been used for collecting taxes, in the form of goods, to fund the church.
The owner of the Bradford-on-Avon grange was Shaftesbury Abbey. The produce of the surrounding estate was brought across the nearby pack-horse bridge to be stored in the great barn before being sold or used by the nuns themselves. When the abbey was dissolved in 1539, the domestic buildings of the Bradford grange became a farm; the barn remaining in use until 1974.
